Prison visits & detainee welfare

Consular visits, welfare checks and family liaison for Kenyans detained or imprisoned abroad.

Service standard: Visit arranged as soon as access is grantedLast updated: May 2026Available in: EN · SW

Who this is for

Kenyans held in custody, on remand or serving a sentence abroad, and their families at home who need a trusted line to the mission for welfare news.

Consular staff cannot secure release, pay fines or interfere with the host country's legal process, but they monitor welfare, check on treatment and help maintain family contact.

Consular assistance does not override local law. The Ministry cannot get you out of prison or pay legal costs, but it will work to ensure you are treated fairly and humanely.

Free. Consular welfare visits carry no charge.
How long it takes
A visit is arranged as soon as the host authorities grant consular access.
Where
Coordinated by your mission; visits take place at the place of detention.

What happens after you apply

The step most sites skip - so you know what to expect and don't need to call.

  1. Notify your mission of the detention with the person's details.
  2. The mission requests consular access from the host authorities.
  3. A consular officer visits to check welfare and treatment.
  4. The mission maintains contact and relays welfare updates to the family.

If something goes wrong, or you need help

If you are detained, hospitalised, or in immediate danger, do not wait for the form - call the consular emergency line. For questions about an application already submitted, contact the mission directly.

One template, every missionThis page runs on a single service spine - who it's for, what to bring, cost, time, where, what happens next. Nairobi and all 60+ missions fill the same fields with their local facts (fee, address, hours, emergency number). Fix the spine once and every mission improves; only the local data changes.
